MAURICIO MUÑOZ GÓMEZ

Building Bridges Through Language

English<>Spanish translator, interpreter, language professional

It’s great to connect

My name is Mauricio. I’m a seasoned translator, interpreter, and language professional, natively bilingual in Spanish and English thanks to having grown, studied, and worked in Mexico and Canada.

My passion for language started at a young age and led me to study linguistics and become a professional translator. I have 9 years of experience as an in-house, external, and freelance translator, gaining valuable research skills, knowledge of technical terminology, and project management abilites that I apply in my daily work.

My introduction to professional translation was in life sciences, and as part of that work, I translate laboratory reports, drug authorizations, drug trial reports, medical articles, clinical studies, hospital reports, user manuals for lab and hospital equipment, among many other types of documents.

Another major part of my career is legal translation, which involves documents ranging from contracts, agreements, and privacy and user policies to personal documents (vital records), official government communications, public policy, and many others. I have experience with legal documents from Mexico, Canada, US, and the majority of Latin American countries.

I also work in several other fields, including education, tourism, and marketing, and as a consecutive interpreter between Spanish and English.

What I do…

I provide reliable and precise translation and interpretation, acting as a bridge to ensure that crucial information flows properly across cultural and geographical borders and can make the positive impact it needs to.

Legal Translation

I approach legal translation by researching the relevant legal systems, standards, regulations, and background. As a migrant, I’m particularly passionate about language equity and strengthening international cooperation by tackling language barriers.

  •  Personal documents, including vital records (birth/marriage/death certificates), university degrees and transcripts, letters of support or recommendation, CVs, among others. Often these documents are required for immigration applications with the USCIS or IRCC (note I do not provide certified translations for the latter, but can provide an affidavit of translations meeting their requirements).
  • Judicial documents, such as police reports, court decisions in criminal and civil proceedings, and case records.
  • Corporate documentation, such as privacy policies, terms of service, user agreements, SOPs, and employee handbooks.

LIFE SCIENCES

Life sciences involves pharmaceutical products, healthcare, and medical technology. Throughout my years of experience, I have built a solid kit of reference tools, technical glossaries, and research skills that allow me to properly approach these sensitive materials.

  • Clinical trial reports and laboratory research on drugs, vaccines, medical devices, etc.

  • Documents submitted to regulatory authorities for the approval of drug/medical products.

  • Papers on medical and scientific research published in international journals.

  • Patient history records: consultation reports, lab tests, discharge summaries, etc.

HUMAN RIGHTS

Motivated by my personal and family history, I am passionate about advancing projects for human rights, equality, education, and socioeconomic development. I have done translation work on human rights reports about Latin America, particularly relating to immigration and refugees; projects advocating for equal access to medical/financial aid; initiatives to increase and improve access to education; and projects for LGBTQ+ human rights.

LOCALIZATION

My lifelong immersion in both the English- and Spanish-speaking spheres has given me an innate understanding of cultural nuances crucial for connecting with international audiences. I localize into Canadian and US English, and Mexican/US/LatAm Spanish in fields such as tourism, marketing, subtitling (TV programs, documentaries, short-form videos), software and technology, etc.

More about my work and impact

APPROACH AND QUALITY

I invest in doing thorough research for each project, because that’s what makes the difference between an amateur translation and a professional translation. This involves both linguistic and technical research: it’s not just about consulting dictionaries, I also reference legislation, articles, patents, reports, and any other available secondary source. The time and project management skills I have learned throughout my career are how I ensure each project meets its deadline without compromising my own quality standards or my clients’.

IMPACT

The impact of translators is often not immediately evident, because a lot of our work happens in the background, in support of other professionals or companies. I am passionate about working in the fields that I do because it has allowed me to make positive contributions towards improving healthcare around the world, including during the pandemic; to help people navigate complex and evolving immigration processes while also advocating for migrants’ rights; to improve young people’s access to quality education in any language; to allow people to connect through art, culture, and technology; and so much more.
